The dated and disjointed space of this suburban
Chicago home was in need of a complete overhaul. The
homeowners desired a more modern and functional kitchen
that would blend with the rest of their updated
contemporary home. They hired the team at Janco Design
Group to help them achieve their design goals.
Early on in the process it was determined that enclosing the
existing rear stairway would add just enough floor space to
accommodate a large angled island with comfortable seating for
4. Wide drawers were incorporated into the design along with
square column accent pieces to complement the floating shelves
used for displaying the owners pottery.
A built-in storage bench and small granite table create an
area to recline with a good book or accommodate additional
guests when entertaining. Frosted glass windows allow for
natural light while obscuring the view of the side of the
adjacent home. A commercial style range is the focal point of
the cooking center and is planned to get much use. The doorway
into the dining room was relocated for better flow and to allow
for the addition of a bar/prep sink.
During construction, it was discovered that a portion of the
existing floor was an old concrete slab and part of the
foundation did not meet current building codes. Janco addressed
these issues by designing a new foundation and floor system
along with several structural beams needed for the enclosed
porch space. Large storage cabinets, heated porcelain tile floor
and pedal actuated faucet were the icing on this thoroughly
modern kitchen.
