The challenge presented to Nick G. Virgilio, CKD, CGR, president and owner of Janco Design Group, Inc. was to convert an inefficient pantry into additional storage and counter space in this suburban Chicago home.

The pantry wall to be improved was load bearing with several mechanical items above it, creating a challenge for the structural engineers. They solved this problem by installing two short steel beams flush into the ceiling, allowing the new prairie style cherry cabinetry to occupy that additional space. The cabinets are accented by a striking Tropical Brown Granite, which was beautifully incorporated into both the ceramic tile backsplash and the ceramic tile floor completing a custom design created by the homeowner herself.

The focal point of this magnificent kitchen is the cooking center. The commercial style stainless steel Five-Star range is topped by a stainless steel Sirius Range Hood, with a gorgeous ceramic decorative plate inserted into the ceramic tile backsplash between the two appliances.

The island size was increased dramatically, creating space for additional storage as well as a beverage cooler. The interesting shape of the granite top nearly doubled the existing counter space, as well as allowed for a dining and snack area for the homeowner’s small children.

Emphasizing the spectacular garden view of their kitchen was also a priority. The lush garden was brought indoors by the oversized windows above the sink and the sliding french door overlooking the small pond and brick patio. The finished product is a kitchen with plentiful storage and a place for the whole family to convene and enjoy the comforts of home.
